The Minister of Culture and Education is the Guardian of the EPTA Iceland Piano Competition
Sponsors: The Icelandic National Radio RÚV Rás 1, Icelandic Teachers Union, Icelandic Music Fund.

 

I

The competition is open to students who are studying the piano with a current member of EPTA Iceland on the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels of study on Nov. 25th. 2018

The teachers of all students entering the competition are current members of EPTA Iceland and with membership dues paid as of July 1st. 2018

The competition has three divisions:

  1. Division ages 7-11 (born 31.12. 2007 or later)
  2. Division ages 12-15 (born 31.12. 2003 or later)
  3. Division ages 16-19 (born 31.12. 1999 or later)

 

II

Applications should be sent electronically to the EPTA Iceland email: epta@epta.is

Deadline for applications: July 1st. 2018

Application fee: Isk 5000 to be paid into EPTA´s account 0515-26-13773 kt. 690586-2239

Payment of application fee bank confirmation to be mailed to epta@epta.is

 

Included with the application are:

  1. Bank confirmation of the payment of application fee
  2. Copy of Birth Certificate / Passport
  3. Color Photograph (jpg)
  4. A brief summary of studies (100 words) and a current e-mail of student applicant, his/her parents/legal guardians & teacher
  5. A repertoire list for all competition rounds
  6. A confirmation signed by the EPTA teacher of applicant including a statement of current status and length of study
  7. A confirmation signed by the parent /legal guardian of applicant including a statement allowing the applicant to participate in the competition adhering to the conditions including the publication of names, age, video recordings of performances and other information relevant to be used in connection, implementation and follow-up of the competition

The Jury´s decisions are final

The Jury reserves the right not to accept applications

The application fee is non-refundable

The applicant will not participate in any other music performances / events during Nov. 24 – 25th. 2018

EPTA Iceland reserves the right to publicize all performances documented on video/audio recordings, photos, interviews and other data and information relevant to the competition be used in connection, implementation and follow-up of the competition

 

IV

Round 1 – the applicant produces a video recording of his/her own piano performance playing the required works from his/her own repertoire list and transfers the video files to his/her own closed youtube channel. Links to the applicant´s closed youtube channel will be sent electronically with the application

The Jury will choose maximum 10 applicants from each age division based upon the performances documented on the applicant´s youtube channel

The Jury selection from each age division of Round 1 will be announced on Sep. 1st. 2018

 

V

Round 2 – the applicants selected by the Jury from each age division of Round 1 will be invited to perform their repertoire live on-stage in Kaldalón Harpa´s concert hall in front of the Jury on Nov. 24th. 2018

Finals – the applicants selected by the Jury from each age division of Round 2 will be invited to perform their repertoire live on-stage in Kaldalón Harpa´s concert hall in front of the Jury on Nov. 25th. 2018

The competition will be open to the public

 

VI

All participants will receive a certificate of participation

Prizes will be awarded in each age division for the 1st., 2nd. and 3rd. place and for the best performance of the competition commissioned piece by Agnar Már Magnússon*

All prizewinners will perform for the audience at the Awards Ceremony in Kaldalón Harpa on Nov. 25th. 2018

 

VII

Repertoire – All repertoire shall be performed from memory with the exception of the piano work by AMM:

1. division ages 7-11 (born 31.12. 2007 or later)

Round 1 – 5 min
Work A: Etude
Work B: Classical – a movement from a Sonatina / Sonata or Variations

Round 2 – 5 min
Work C: One or more Romantic works or a work from the 20th. / 21st. Century

Finals – 5 min
Work D: free choice of the applicant, may be works from Round 1

2. division ages 12-15 (born 31.12. 2003 or later)

Round 1 – 5 -8 min
Work A: Etude
Work B: Classical – a movement from a Sonatina / Sonata or Variations

Round 2 – 5 -10 min
Work C: One or more Romantic works or a work from the 20th. / 21st. Century

Finals – 5 -8 min
Work D: free choice of the applicant, may be works from Round 1

3. division ages 16-19 (born 31.12. 1999 or later)

Round 1 – 10 – 12 min
Work A: Etude
Work B: Classical – a movement from a Sonatina / Sonata or Variations

Round 2 – 15 min (please note that the work by AMM is not included in the time limit)
Work C: One or more Romantic works or a work from the 20th. / 21st. Century
Work X: The Premiere of the new work of Agnar Már Magnússon (permissible with music score)

Finals – 10 – 12 min
Work D: free choice of the applicant, may be works from Round 1
